Oldest Person Present

Picture

Probably the oldest person in attendance at the Centennial observance was Mrs. Ida Hayek of Los Angeles. She was 97 years of age on August 25. Mrs. Hayek makes an annual visit to her hometown, but this year came in July rather than September. When she comes she stays with the Virgil Smith family who occupy her family home, which is now about 100 years old. The Smith family has farmed the land for Mrs. Hayek for 54 years. Mrs. Hayek grew up in the Bellwood community, then moved to Omaha in 1924 and to Los Angeles in 1937.

Highlights of Centennial Days

Even the chairman of the Centennial is not immune from a dunking. Robert R. Bell, right, volunteered to be a dunkee immediately after he had run in the 10,000 meter run, a refreshing change from the sweat worked up in the race.

Picture

Wiping the sweat from his brow is one of about a dozen members of the Nebraska National Guard M.P. detachment who joined the Bellwood marshal, county sheriff's officers and state troopers in providing the traffic control and other law enforcement support. This picture was taken moments before the parade began.
