tween Cunning City and Tekamah. In the winter of 1861 Mr. McGuire built two log dwellings for settlers and in September of the following year enlisted in Company B, 2nd Nebraska Volunteer Cavalry, serving for nine months. After returning to Burt county, Mr. McGuire resided for two years on the present Fred Snyder farm, then owned by Clint B. Smith. In 1865 he erected the residence which is the present home of the family in Arizona township. It is now the second oldest house in the county, but is a cozy comfortable home still. Mr. McGuire has always been an influential citizen in his community having served many times in positions of trust.
   Mr. McGuire was united in marriage, September 2nd, 1860, to Julia B. Scott.

   BENNIAH P. FIFIELD was born October 25th, 1836, in Fayette county, Indiana. In early manhood he moved to Bloomington, Illinois. In 1875 he removed to Tekamah with his family. Here he followed the trade of contractor and builder and many of the early buildings of this city and vicinity were erected under his supervision. In 1885 he and his family removed to Central City and two years later to David City, this state, where he passed from this life October 8th, 1890, after a protracted illness.
   Mr. Fifield was united in marriage December 28th, 1858, to Abigail Parish.

   HENRY REUBEN WALBRIDGE was born April 2nd, 1835, at Attica, New York. In 1867 he removed with his family to Tekamah, arriving in this city April 16th. He entered the service of the Union at the breaking out of the rebellion, as a musician, enlisting in Company G, 160th New York Infantry, and served three years and one month. He was taken prisoner April 8th, 1864, and served for nine months as a prisoner of war at Fort Tyler. He passed from this life at Grand Island, May 20th, 1901.

   Mr. Walbridge was united in marriage December 25th, 1856, to Miss Lavina C. Spink.

   WILLIAM S. FOWLER was born in Circleville, Pickaway county, Ohio, February 28th, 1821. At the age of six years he moved with his parents to Lancaster, Ohio. When fourteen years of age his father died and he was bound apprentice in a boot and shoe shop for a period of five years. After completing his apprenticeship he remained and worked at the trade for nineteen years more. In 1854, he with his family, moved to Lincoln, Illinois, and later to Flager, Iowa. ln 1878 the Fowler family became residents of Burt county and resided for twenty-six years on the old homestead in Arizona township. Mr. Fowler passed from this life April 29th, 1904.
   He was united in marriage to Miss Maria Beaver, October 15th, 1848.

   CLIFFORD S. LAUGHLIN was born at Decatur, Nebraska, in 1870, where he resided until 1882, when he accompanied his parents to their farm ten miles north of Tekamah. In his early manhood he become interested in intellectual training and from 1889 to 1897 be taught in the public schools of this county and in the Tekamah City Schools. From 1898 until 1902 he served as County Superintendent of Public Instruction in Burt county and under his management the schools showed marked progress. At present he is junior member of the lumber, coal and implement firm of Schroeder & Laughlin of this city.
   In November, 1897, Mr. Laughlin was united in marriage to Miss Alice Thomason, of Alta, Iowa, who was principal of the Tekamah City Schools also Superintendent of County Schools for one year.

   CHRIS JOHNSON was born the 15th day of August, 1809, in the southern part of Denmark, where he attended the public schools until reaching the age of fourteen rears. He then entered a Business College
