Gerhard Harms1 was born on 1 Apr 1817 in Hatten, Oldenberg, Germany. He died on 13 Apr 1895 in Hooper, NE. He was buried on 17 Apr 1895 in Hooper Cemetary.
Gerhard Harms left Germany with his family after the war with Prussia and Austria which was the beginning of the Prussian push to become more powerful. They left Prussia (Germany) because they did not agree with the new conscription laws and to escape the military service. For your immigrant ancestors, having their name on a ship's manifest was the culmination of a dream - and often the beginning of a nightmare. A steerage ticket to America bought a crowded, 3,000-mile voyage of two weeks to a month as human cargo, suffering sea sickness and unsanitary conditions on a diet of thin soup and bread. Harder still than the voyage was leaving behind everything and everyone you knew. Gerhard and his family came to America in 1870 on the SS Rhein from Port Bremen and arrived in New York. The Rhein was a 332 ft long & 40 ft wide, two masts, iron construction, single screw and had a speed of 13 knots. The accommodations were 70 - 1st, 100 - 2nd, and 600 - 3rd class passengers. He settled on a farm in Dodge Co. He later purchased a farm near Hooper on the Fremont - Hooper road. The Harms family were among the pioneers founding the Oldenburg settlement. Gerhard's portrait is in the 1902 PROGRESSIVE MEN OF NEBRASKA - A BOOK OF PORTRAITS - DODGE COUNTY EDITION. He is on page 123.

We remember him talking about his childhood - being hidden in the closet by his mother from the Indians, helping his dad in the general store, and swimming in the river. God gifted dad with an inquisitive and bright mind. He was the only member of his family to pursue college. After graduation he began working for AT&T where he was employed until his retirement. He was a loyal employee who loved his work and contributed much in his field. Dad and mom were married almost 46 years and we remember a very loving marriage. While they came first with each other, there was such love for us as we were growing up. Dad was always there to help and encourage us. Dad lived a long and happy life. He had a loving wife and children, a full life of work and many years of retirement. What more can we ask for in this life? Now his real life begins.
