David B. WELCH, Private; enlisted at Derry June 7, 1862 for three years; mustered in on July 3, 1862 Concord. He was a resident of Newton, NH, but listed his birthplace as Thornton, NH. He was born around 1830. He was reported "absent, missing in action" July 30, 1864 after a mine explosion at Petersburg, VA. He had been captured, and died of disease in Danville, VA, January 8, 1865. There is some dispute about the actual date of death; the other date mentioned is October 30, 1864 by a fellow prisoner's affidavit, sworn a year or so later, but in official pension papers, the January date is listed. I recently received copies of the government pension files which give this information. David Welch left a wife and two young children. |
