WASHBURN, MAGDALENA ELIZABETH COUNTRYMAN......Bakers' Fork enters on the eastern side of Brush Creek and flows west until it reaches the central part, where it changes course and flows south Washburn Hill, with an elevation of 1,334 feet, is north of the bend in the creek. It received its name from James Washburn born in Virgina in 1780, who, with his wife Elizabeth settled in the wild country at the foot of the hill as early as 1800. Their cabin home did not have a door and the family were often times frightened when an wild beast pushed aside the bearskin covering and tried to enter. Washburn lived until Feb 12, 1848, his wife, born in 1776, was ninety-four when she died in 1870. A son, James Washburn, Jr. born in 1814, passed away in Jan 1856.
On this day of April A.D. one thousand eight hundred and fifty five personally appeared before me a Justice of the Peace duly authorized to administer oaths within and for the County and state aforesaid Elizabeth Washburn aged 77 years, a resident of Highland County in the State of Ohio, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that she is the widow of James Washburn, deceased who was a private in the Company commanded by Captain Daniel McCreery in the regiment of Ohio Militia, commanded by Colonel William Keys, in the War with Great Britian, declared by the United States on the 18th day of June 1812 that her said husband was drafted at Highland County on or about the last day of July A.D. 1813 for the term of an indefinite period, and was honorably discharged at Upper Sandusky sometime in September A.D. 1813.
She further states that she was married to the said James Washburn in the County in Ohio on the 10th da of July 1803 A.D. by one William Davis a Justice of the Peace and that her name before her said marriage was Elisabeth Countryman that her said husband died at Highland County on the 13 day of February A.D. 1848 and that she is now a widow.
She further declares that she has heretofore made application for bounty land under the act approved on September 28, 1850 and obtained a land warrant for 40 acres. She makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining bounty land, to which she may be entitled, under the act approved March 30, 1855. she also declares that she never received nor applied for bounty land under this or any other act of Congress except as above stated.

On this 20th day of November A.D. one thousand eight hundred and fifty personally appeared before me a Justice of the Peace within and for the County and State a fore said Elisabeth Washburn aged 70 years, a resident of Highland County in the State of Ohio who being duly sworn according to law declares that she is the widow of James Washburn deceased, who was a private in the Company commanded by Captain Isaac Taylor and then under Captain Daniel McCrery and Captain Vanhook she thinks also in the 2nd Regiment of Ohio Militia commanded by Colonel William Keys in the war Great Britian declared by the United States on the 18th day of June 1812 that her said husband was drafted in Highland County and State of Ohio on or above the 29th day of July A.D. 1813, for the term of specified by the Proclamation of the Governor of Ohio and continued in actual service in said war for the term of forty days and was honorably discharged at Franklinton she thinks, (she says that Captain Vanhook gave her husband an order to draw his pay at Franklinton) on or about the first September A.D. 1813, as will appear by the muster rolls of said Company, his original certificate of discharge being lost.
She further states that there is no family record of her marriage to her said husband or of her said husband's death. She further states that she was married to the said James Washburn in Pike County in the State of Ohio sometime in May A.D. 1802, by one William Davis a Justice of the Peace and that her name before her said marriage was Elisabeth Countryman that her said husband died in Highland County and state of Ohio sometime in February S.D. 1848 and that she is still a widow. She makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the bounty land to which she may be entitled under the act passed September 1850.
