Peter McVean Homestead

Peter McVean's parents were born in Scotland, but were living in Livingston County, New York, at the time of his birth on May 25, 1825. The girl he later married, Albin Marian Gould, was also born in New York state on Oct. 27, 1832. Peter and Albin., were married on Nov. 2, 1857, in Hartford, Wis. By 1869, Peter and Albino had a family of five children, Edmund, born in 1858, Carrie, 1860; Harriet, 1865, 64arian, 1867; and Elmer, 1864. In December, 1869, they homesteaded a place in the town of Sherman, Clark county. The McVean family lived at the Bowles home about 2 months while building their first tog cabin. On March 1, 1870, the family was able to move into their own log house, which stood for over 70 years. Two more children were born into this family, Anna, Dec. 24, 1871, and Eugene, May 6, 1874, making nine in the family.

Peter McVean was a member of the town board of the town of Loyal when a portion of it was made into the town of Sherman in 1872. He was instrumental in forming the first town board of the Town of Sherman, and served on it for many years.

Peter McVean died in 1895, and his wife a week later. The homestead was taken over by the eldest son, Edmund, who lived there until his death in 1922. At present, his son, Frank, owns and operates the home place. Metcalf Sugar Bush, LeRoy Metcalf Syrup making has been an annual spring event in the Metcalf family for some 60 years. First by James and Clara, and family. The first equipment used was the open iron kettle, sap was added as the level in the kettle dropped, and the long boiling produced a dark syrup. The modern equipment and sanitary conditions of today produce a high quality syrup at the Metcalf Bush which has been operated by LeRoy (son of James and Clara) and his wife, Grace, since 1935. First in partnership with his parents until 1964, LeRoy purchased the maple grove and took over the complete operation in which his family of three children, Joan, Ronald, and Carol, and wife Grace are carrying on with the syrup production.

In was in 1936 when LeRoy and Grace Metcalf purchased 40 acres with buildings in township of Roseburg, Clark county, which was the beginning of their family farm. In the years to follow, LeRoy performed many of the farm jobs in addition to his farming to earn extra cash to enlarge and improve the farming operation, which now is 293 acres and 50 head of livestock.
