Smith, Joel Sylvester (Oct 1832 - 28 Augl 1901)
Joel Sylvester Smith, familiarly known as Uncle Smith, died at the residence of R.B. French in the town of Levis, Clark County Aug. 28, 1901, aged 68 years and 11 months. The cause of his death was paralysis. Mr. Smith had made his home at Mr. French's family for twenty-two years. He was well known among the loggers on Black River, having worked in the camps of the Withee, Cullen, Ayers and others for the past thirty-five years. He was born near Skowhegan, Maine, and has one son who lives somewhere in this state, and one in the British dominions. He was buried Friday at the Levis Cemetery, Rev. G.W. Longenecker officiating.
