Davis, Mahlon (8 Dec 1881 - 31 JAN 1902)

The startling intelligence that Mahlon Davis was fatally injured at Hollister's Mill near Thorp, Clark County, was received her last Thursday morning and his parents were summoned to come at once. They went on the first train and on arriving at Thorp found that arrangements had been made to removed him to the hospital at Chippewa Falls on the same train they were on they accompanied him there and everything possible was done to save his life, but without avail. He died Friday morning at 7:30.

As near as can be learned the accident happened in this way, Mahlon was working on a roll way about 30 or 40 high, when a log scaling about 200 feet was sent up. He started to catch it with his cant hook, but his foot slipped and he fell from the pile and the log rolled after him, striking him at the bottom, and crushing him badly at the hips, from which he died the following day as stated.

Mahlon, the beloved son of Rice and Mary Davis, was born Dec. 8th, 1881. He has always lived in this neighborhood, and was one of our brightest, noblest Christian young men. Death is a great calamity, but when we have the faith and assurance that our loved ones have lived an upright God fearing life, we can have no apprehension for their future and sorrow is only felt that they are gone from our companionship in this world forever. He was perfectly conscious till the moment he died, and bade father and mother goodbye and asked them to meet him in heaven. With a smile he fell asleep in Jesus.

The funeral was held Sunday afternoon in the Granton Opera House, the church being altogether too small to accommodate the large gathering of friends who came to pay their respects. The casket was covered with beautiful flowers. The Stanley Baseball Club, of which Mahlon was a member last season, sent a beautiful wreath as a token of their love for their lost companion. Rev. Kerr of Neillsville preached the funeral sermon.

The parents wish to return heartfelt thanks to the friends who assisted them in their great sorrow and loss.
