The Kinzele-Crothers Farm History - Town of York

About 2 years after his arrival in Clark County in 1883, John P. Kintzele purchased the forty acres located just to the west of the Romadka Brothers mill in Section 14 of the town of York, It had about one acre cleared and had a house on it. It is not known who he bought it from, although the Charles Hayden lived in the house before John Kintzele married Effie Allen in 1897 and moved into it. In succeeding years, they greatly enlarged the house, more land was cleared, out buildings and a barn were built. They lived there until her death in 1912. In 1916, he was was elected Register of Deeds, but continued to live here part of the time. Additional land was added to make 160 acres.

They had four children, Francis, who died quite young, Vernon, who never married, died in 1963, Harland who lives in Neillsville where he has been a Court Reporter for Circuit Court judges for many years. He is married to Theodora Gallagher and they have two daughters. Mildred, married to Wendell Crothers of Neillsville in 1919 and they moved to the farm making it into a modern dairy farm and living there until her death in 1952. They had two children, Jack and Jane. Wendell still lives here.

After several years away from the farm during which Jack attended collect at River Falls until his enlistment in January, 1942, in World War II, he returned to farm with his father. He had served as a gunner on 13-17's during the battles over Germany and the assault on France during 0-day and after, earning the D FC and other combat medals. In 1942, he married Marcia Nelson of River Falls. Her parents were Lauritz and Effie Rudesill Nelson of River Falls. They have two sons, Mark and Bruce.

In 1949, they purchased the former Mrs. Canfield farm in Section 13 and added its land to the farm. The pond, a popular neighborhood swimming place, was constructed in 1958. The house was gold to Jane and Merle Bartsch, and they have since replaced it with a new home. Their children are Connie, Rick, Peter, Kay, and Say.

In 1960, greenhouses were moved from their property to the east edge of Neillsville and erected on the home farm, A greenhouse and nursery business was established at the farm, Jack continued to farm until his death in 1967. The nursery and greenhouse business is being continued by the family.

*The story of Romadka is an interesting one. The Northern Manufacturing Co. located at Seymour, Wis., reorganized as the Romadka Manufacturing Co. and in 1883 established a large mill in Section 24, York Township, where they started the manufacture of hubs, spokes and wagon felloes, in addition to general sawmilling. John P. Kintzele came to Clark Co., Wis. as their agent.

John P. Kintzele for many years prominent in the affairs of his community and Clark County died after a long illness at his old home ?Romadka Homestead? in the Town of York, Oct. 3.

Kintzele was born in Milwaukee on Jan. 21, 1860. He grew to manhood there, receiving his education at the public and parochial schools and graduated from Mayers Commercial Business College.

For a couple years, he was a stenographer in the office of Ludwig and Somers, attorneys where he gained knowledge of law.

Later, Kintzele became an accountant for the Northern Manufacturing Co., at Seymour, Wis. The firm was reorganized into the Romadka Manufacturing Co., with a large plant at the hamlet knows as Romadka in 1883. After leaving the employ of the Romadka Company, Kintzele established relations with various concerns such as manager of large logging industries as well as sales of timber and wild lands. Later, he went into business for himself, buying and shipping out thousands of cords of wood and selling land on the old branch of the Milwaukee railroad which had its terminus near Romadka.

In the Romadka area, Kintzele purchased a tract of land, which he cleared for a farm. He built a beautiful home in which he took great pride, planted several trees and beautified the premises.

Kintzele was town clerk, clerk of the school district and served on the Clark County Board of Supervisors. He later became the Clark County Register of Deeds, being elected in 1916 and serving in that capacity for 12 years. He was treasurer of the Lynn Mutual Insurance Co., the Clark County Agricultural Society, was a director of several banks, and other organizations. During that time, he operated an extensive abstract business.

Kintzele was married to Miss Effie Allen, on July 27, 1887, Town of York. Miss Allen had been a country school teacher. They had four children; Frances, who died as a child; Vernon, who lived at the old home; Mildred, Mrs. Wendell Crothers, at home and Harland A., at Neillsville.

The funeral service was held at the little church near the Windfall Cemetery.
