Gates, Katherine M. (6 Jul 1859 - 21 Jul 1904)

Mrs. Katherine M. Gates, wife of James L. Gates died at their home in Milwaukee July 21, 1904. The following obituary is taken from the Milwaukee Sentinel of July 23:

"Mrs. Katherine Meade Gates, aged 45 years, wife of James L. Gates, died at 7 o'clock Thursday evening at her home, 171 Prospect Av., of tuberculosis, after an illness of two years. She had been in California all winter in hope of regaining her health, but returned home May 1.

The deceased was born at Northwood, N.H., July 6, 1859, and resided there until 1885, when she was married to James L. Gates of Neillsville, Clark County. Mr. and Mrs. Gates lived at Neillsville until 1887, when they moved to Milwaukee. Mrs. Gates was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church and also of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. Gates is survived by a husband, two children, Harry, 16 years old, and Helen, 14 years old.

The funeral will be held at the residence Saturday afternoon and at 7:20 o'clock the remains will be taken in a special car over the North Western road to Neillsville, where interment will be made."

The remains arrived in Neillsville Sunday morning in a special car, accompanied by relatives and friends, and was taken to the residence of Hon. R.J. MacBride. The burial took place Sunday afternoon and was attended by a large number of Neillsville friends of the family. Brief services were held at the cemetery, Rev. G.W. Longenecker officiating. A dispatch from this city to the Sentinel says of the deceased:

:Mrs. Gates was retiring and reserved in her manner, but was beloved by a large circle of intimate friends, and was a woman of unusual accomplishments and culture. She was a musician of high merit and well versed in the languages. She filled an important social position until her failing health in recent years caused her withdrawal from social affairs. Her death will be widely mourned."

Those who came on the special car were, the husband, Jas. L. Gates, Harry and Helen Gates, children of the deceased, Miss Helen Meade of Boston, her sister, Robert L. Gates, her step-son and his wife, Dr. N.A. Peterson of Soldiers Grove and his wife, formerly Edith Gates, her step-daughter, Henry Goli of Milwaukee, Mrs. Chas. Smith of Neenah, Julius Jungblud and wife of Milwaukee, and Anna Teuscher, who for fourteen years had been a faithful servant in the household.
