Cook, Morton M. (20 Apr 1837 - 27 Jan 1905)

Morton M. Cook died at his home in the town of Hewett, Clark County of heart failure Jan. 27, 1905. He was born in Springville, Seneca Co. Ohio, April 20, 1837. He was a soldier in the Civil War, enlisting in Company C. 164th regiment, Ohio Vol. In 1862, and was honorably discharged on the 5th day of Oct. 1865.

The deceased was married to Miss Sarah Metcalf in 1856 and moved to his present home in Clark Co. in 1867, where he has since resided, and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. For several years after his marriage he was a teacher in the country school in Seneca Co. Ohio and Clark Co., Wis. He held various town offices, and has been a member of the Co. Board at different times. He leaves to mourn his loss a wife and nine children: George Cook and Mrs. Henry Clark of Merrillan, Mrs. frank Ayers, Alonzo, Ray and Leroy of Neillsville, Morton of Medford, Jay of Centralia, Wash., and Mrs. Joe Radek of Monmouth, Ore. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Cordelia Woodruff of Mich. and three brothers in Ohio.

Those from away who attended the funeral were: Eli Metcalf of DeGraft, Ohio, Nelson Metcalf of Merrillan, brothers of Mrs. Cook, and Mr. Peffercorn of Merrillan.

The bereaved wife and family have the sympathy of the entire community. The funeral services were held at the Congregational Church Feb. 3, Rev. Campbell officiating. The remains were interred in the Neillsville Cemetery.

School was closed in his home district, as a mark of respect on the day of his funeral.
