Slocum, Mary (31 Oct 1830 - 1 Jan 1909)
Mrs. Mary Slocum, one of the oldest residents of the town of Grant, Clark County died Jan. 1, 1909. She was born at Enniskillen, Ireland Oct. 31, 1830, and came to America when nineteen years of age, living in the state of Massachusetts. She was married to Chas. Slocum April 3, 1856. They moved to Pewaukee, Wis., and lived there ten years, coming to Clark County in 1865, moving to their homestead in Grant the following spring. She continued to live at the old home until within a short time before her death, when she was taken to her son’s home to be cared for.
She was a woman of strong character, honest and upright, doing well her work in life for herself, her family and the community. She leaves three children, two sons, Otis and Austin and one daughter, Mrs. Wm. West. She leaves also nineteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The funeral took place Monday, Rev. Dorrenbach officiating, burial taking place at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery.
