Robert Earl Schoonmaker was born Aug. 26, 1909 at Frankville, Iowa, and passed to his eternal reward, after an illness of three months, at Minneapolis, Minn., at 9:30 p.m., Feb. 11, 1937, at the age of 27 years, 5 months and 15 days.
He lived with his grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. C.R. Moore at Frankville part of the time, coming to Greenwood, Clark County, Wis., when a small boy, where he lived until 1925. Her he attended Sunday School and High School. At the age of 9 years he was baptized and received into membership of the M.E. Church. He was a leader in the Epworth League and other young peoples activities. He left with his mother for Minneapolis in 1925 and entered the Twin City Barber College, where he completed the course and was graduated the youngest of any to ever leave the school. He worked at the barber trade only a short time, when he was compelled to give up this type of work on account of poor health. He then entered the Dunwoody Institute of Minneapolis, where he graduated with honors as a mechanical Draftsman. This type of work he followed most of the time up to his death.
For the past seven years Robert was a valued member of Battery A. of the 151 Field Art. Of the Minnesota National Guards. Here in Battery A. he was regarded by officers and men as a person of character, a good soldier and a fine friend. He was known as Sargent Schoonmaker.
He was united in marriage March 19, 1936 to Mary Doone, who together with his mother and step-father Archie H. Foss, survive him. His father passed away several years ago.
Funeral services were held at the family home in Minneapolis, Sunday, Feb. 14 at 4:00 p.m., Rev. Ireland officiated. Miss Nichols sang two solos, "The Old Rugged Cross" and "The Garden of Roses". These songs were Robert’s favorites and he sang them the day before he was called to his reward.
On Monday the body was taken to Frankville, Iowa, where interment was made in the cemetery there. Services were held from the church which Robert attended when a boy. The pallbearers were boyhood schoolmates.
