Brockway, Harriet A. (6 Apr 1854 - 15 Dec 1937)

Harriet Abigail Smith, daughter of Uriah T. Smith and Amanda C. Hale, was born April 6, 1854 at Scott, Wayne Co., Penn., one of eight children, five of which have preceded her in death, namely: Julia May Smith, Mrs. Emma A. Deming, Mrs. Frances Ford, Uriah W. Smith and Wesley E. Smith.

The deceased lived with her parents in the south during the Civil War, going through interesting experiences, accounts of which she used to relate in later life. Her parents were Methodist people, her father having considerable part in Marseilles, Ill. Methodist Church, she being reared in this faith.

On Feb. 26, 1872 she was married to Orlando Ketchum, at Pleasant Gap, Mo. Mr. Ketchum died March 22, 1924 at Black River Falls. To this union two children were born, May B. and Archie Ketchum.

In her early married life the deceased lived in Melrose, Wis., where both her children were born and attained their early schooling. Later she spent a few years in Northern Michigan, as well as residing for a time in Fairchild and Black River Falls, Wis. Her second marriage was to Mr. A.J. Brockway, who has been dead for several years. For the past 30 years Mrs. Brockway has lived with her daughter, Mrs. May Westcott and since 1915 has lived in Greenwood, Clark County.

The deceased first took sick on Dec. 1, 1934, losing the use of her right hand and arm, although she was able to be up and around. On Jun 23, 1936 she suffered a stroke and has been practically helpless ever since. Her second stroke occurred Nov. 29, 1937 at 1:10 p.m., in the presence of her son and daughter, daughter-in-law and son-in-law. Her going was quiet and without a struggle. She has had very little pain during all the months of her confinement. She was 83 years, 8 months and 9 days old at the time of her death.

Mrs. Brockway leaves to mourn her going, her daughter, Mrs. May Westcott and husband of Greenwood; her son, Archie Ketchum and wife of Millston; two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Menges, of Marsellies, Ill.; and Mrs. Louella May Logan of Sandwich, Ill.; a half-sister, Mrs. Fred Bonnell (Florence Gertrude) of Los Angeles, Calif.; and a half-brother, Forest E. Smith of Los Angeles, Calif.; also 3 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, as well as neighbors and friends. All of Mrs. Brockway’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren were here for the funeral. Her sisters were unable to come on account of neither being able to take so long a journey.

Funeral services were held at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Westcott, of Greenwood at 1 p.m., Sunday afternoon, Dec. 19th, Rev. C.R. Gaylord, pastor of the Greenwood Methodist Church officiated. Three beautiful hymns "Abide With Me", "Rock of Ages" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" were rendered by Mesdames Harold Stabnow and Geo. Haeuser, accompanied by Miss Mabel Bishop at the organ.

Following the home service the body was taken to Millston, Wis., for burial, and brief services were held there at the cemetery by Rev. Gaylord. A few local friends assembled to pay their respects to the deceased.

Mrs. Brockway has been lovingly cared for by her daughter and son-in-law during these many long months of her confinement. Her affliction has been greatly lightened by the tender and constant care of her daughter.
