Burr, John (1830 - 22 Apr 1912)

John burr died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Carter, in this city April 22, 1912. Mr. Burr was born at Yorkshire, England in 1830. When about 8 years of age he came to Ohio, and at that time was left with no one to care for him and had to make his own way in a strange land. When a young man he came to Wisconsin and settled in Green County. He enlisted at the age of 21 in Co. E. 8th Reg. Wis. Vol. Inf., under Capt. Wm. C. Young, to serve three years, but was seriously wounded at the battle of Corinth, Oct. 3, 1862, causing a permanent disability. He spent some time in the hospital in Mound City, Ill, until he received his honorable discharge. He was married to Miss Emeline Crowell, March 15, 1863 in Green Co., Wis. Mr. burr was a man of strong Christian character and an active church worker wherever he lived. He united with the Free Baptist Church in Dec. 1878. In 1894 Mr. and Mrs. Burr moved to Blanchardville, Wis., and there they joined the United Brethren Church, and helped to build the church of that denomination there. In April 1904, they moved to Neillsville, Clark County to spend their declining days near their daughter, Mrs. Carter, with whom Mr. Burr has made his home since the death of his wife on May 1, 1906. Here he joined the Congregational Church and gave it such active support as his age and waning strength would permit. He was also an honored member of the G.A.R. Post. He leaves to mourn his death two daughters, Mrs. Chas. Ash of Blue Earth, Minn., and Mrs. John Carter of Neillsville, also five grandchildren and many friends who will long remember him. During his residence here he has won the universal respect and warm friendship of all who met him. He has stood for all that made for good citizenship and high ideals of life. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Congregational Church. Members of the G.A.R. are requested to assemble at the hall at 1 o’clock sharp to attend the funeral.
