NEW SAW MILL NOW IN OPERATION August 1937
The new saw mill of the Slauson Tie and Lumber Co., has begun operations and during the past week have been producing ties and lumber with great rapidity.
The building which is of all galvanized steel construction is situated near the banks of Rock Creek sough of the city and the location is very favorable because of the railroad tracks being so near.
The tie piles along the track grow at the rate of better than 400 ties per day. Visitors are welcome at the mill and it is both educational and interesting to watch the operations.
A new 50 horse power electric motor runs the main saw and machinery and several smaller motors furnish power to other parts thus doing away with hazardous belts and pulleys. Everything is in a neat orderly condition and all has been given a coat of green paint, probably in honor of Greenwood.
This new industry is surely a boom to our community as it employs fourteen men at the mill alone, besides the cutting, skiding and hauling of the timber. Not only that but farmers are receiving substantial checks for some of the wood that has been a long time turning into cash.
Greenwood once ranked high among the logging towns and it looks favorable for a good comeback now although the timber is mostly maple, some oak and rock elm.
The improvement in the roads now days is a great asset to the haulers who place over 600 logs a day at the mill skidway.
James Slauson, who sawed over 60,000 ties last year at Taylor, Wis., and his father-in-law, Mr. Wm. J. Orht of Arena, Wis., are the proprietors of the company and they come here highly recommended both in ability and character which together with their friendly dispositions has won them many new friends here and produced a feeling of confidence wherever there business relations are concerned. Greenwood has a right to be proud of it’s hustling business activities and this new enterprise helps to rate us even higher than before.
