Covill, Isabella Jane ( March 1849- 18 Nov. 1921)

On Nov. 18, 1921, at Retsil, Washington, there passed from earth Mrs. Isabella Jane Covill, the first white child born in Clark county. Mrs. Covill was the daughter of James O’Neill, Sr., the first settler and the founder of Neillsville and his wife, Jane Douglas O’Neill. She was born in March 1849, and was therefore in her seventy-third year. Mrs. Covill grew to womanhood here and married Wilson C. Covill, who was engaged in lumbering. He was also sheriff of Clark county in 1869-70. Many years ago they went to Shelton, Wash., where Mr. Covill became manager of a lumber company. He was a veteran of the Civil war and for several years past they have been at the Veteran’s Home at Retsil, where Mr. Covill still lives. She is also survived by two children, Ralph and Fanny, who reside at Tacoma. Her mother, who was a member of the Douglas family at Melrose died here in 1873. A sister, Mrs. Frank E. Darling also died here in 1897 and the father died in 1882. Mrs. Covill was a woman of rare intelligence and fine qualities of mind, and her death will be mourned by the older people of this locality who remember her early life here.

The funeral occurred at Tacoma Nov. 22.
