Moldenhauer, Michael F. (21 May, 1837 - 7 Jan. 1922)
Michael F. Moldenhauer, on of Neillsville’s oldest residents, died at his home on State Street Jan. 7, aged 84 years, 7 months, 21 days. He was born in the Province of Pommern, Germany, May 21, 1837. When 14 years of age he came with his parents to his country. The family settled at Cedarburg, Wis.; there Michael got a position to work in a store, attended school and obtained a good education. Later he went into lumber camps to work. In August, 1862, he enlisted in Co. A. 26th Wisconsin Volunteers and saw much service in the Civil War. He was in the battles of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Missionary Ridge, Lookout Mountain and many minor engagements; marched with Sherman to the Sea and was wounded at the battle of Averysboro, and was sent home to Madison, where he was discharged May, 1865. He was married at Cedarburg, Jan. 2, 1868, to Miss Christina Wachtmann. They came to Clark County in 1870. They moved to Arcadia for a short time, but came back here again and for a good many years lived on their farm in Lynn township. Here they developed a farm and passed through the usual home-making experiences in a new timber country. In 1903 the farm was sold and Mr. Moldenhauer moved with his family to Franks, Missouri. They lived there till 1910 when they returned to Neillsville and took up their residence. Mr. Moldenhauer was a man of Sterling integrity, a loyal citizen and in his earlier life took an active part in township and school affairs. He was a member of the Odd Fellows, and the Grand Army of the Republic and of the Reformed church. He leaves his wife and five children; Walter H Moldenhauer of Granton, Edwin at home, Mrs. George Cozens of Brooklandville, Md., Mrs. Jack Keating of Antigo and Mrs. W. J. Winters of Tripoli. All were here to attend the funeral which is held this (Thursday) afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Reformed church, Rev. D. Grether officiating. The Odd Fellows will attend in a body and use their ritual service at the cemetery.
