August Schmidt died in an Eau Claire hospital Thursday just before noon. He was taken to the hospital last Saturday and on Monday an operation for ulcer of the stomach performed. He came through the operation in fine shape and there were hopes of a quick recovery. Wednesday unfavorable symptoms developed and the family was summoned to his bedside. He was in his 73rd year.

(Obituary in 4/19/1924 Humbird Enterprise) The funeral of August Schmidt, whose sudden heart attack in an Neillsville hospital on Wednesday of last week, brought sadness not alone to the members of the family, but to the entire community, was held at his late home in this village (Humbird, Clark County, Wis.) at three o'clock on Sunday afternoon. A large number of friends gathered to pay the last tribute of respect to this much respected citizen. Revs. Schleeter of the Evangelical Church of Neillsville , and Rev. Reichert of the Augusta-Humbird congregations, spoke in English and German at the services. A profusion of flowers nearly filled the room where the services were held, gifts from many friends.

The funeral party, consisting of the bereft family: Herman Schmidt, brother of the deceased, and his son Martin, Rev. Schleeter, and Mr. Kretschmer, left on the night train for Denzer, where church services were held Monday, the Rev. Schleeter officiating, assisted by the pastor Rev. Nichol. Burial was made in the cemetery at Denzer.

August Schmidt, born in Pommern, Germany, June 15, 1850, died in Neillsville , Wis., April 10, 1924, was 73 years, 9 months and 25 days of age. He came to America with relatives when in his twelfth year, and settled in Sauk Co., Wis. Fifty years ago last Dec. 12th, he was united in marriage with Miss Caroline Saunders, and the golden wedding anniversary was happily celebrated at their home here last December. To Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt were born three daughters, Mrs. C. B. Joos of Pingree, N.D., Mrs. Peter A. Hemmy and Miss Ida of this place, and one son, Robert, also of this vicinity. Twenty-two years ago they moved from Sauk Co. to a farm north of the village, and continued to reside there until advancing years caused them to relinquish its labors to their son, eight years ago. Since which time their home has been in the village.

Mr. Schmidt is survived by his wife, four children; one brother, Herman, of this village; three sisters, Mrs. Kindshi of Madison, Mrs. Saunders of Baraboo, and Mrs. Schwarze of Denzer, and also many relatives living in Sauk Co.

Those from away who were here to attend the funeral were his daughter, Mrs. Joos of Pingree, N.D., and a brother-in-law, Reinhold Saunders of Watertown, S. D.
