Marty, Michael – Killed in Logging Accident (16 Dec 1977)
Tragedy again struck the Owen and Withee area on Friday, December 16, 1977, as a
logging accident claimed the life of Michael Marty, age 23, Route 2, Withee
Wisconsin. At about 11:15 a.m. Friday, Michael was killed when a tree fell on
him while he and a companion were cutting logs in the Township of Withee about 4
½ miles northwest of Thorp.
Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon, December 19, 1977, at 2:00 p.m.
at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Withee, with the Rev. Douglas Groenewold
officiating. Graveside services were at the Riverside Cemetery.
The pallbearers for the service were Mark Ramburg, John Verklin, Thomas Rincke,
Lyn Spaeth, Harry Mitchell and John Jalowitz.
Michael was born in Columbus, Nebraska on December 25, 1953. His parents moved
to the Owen and Withee area, where he graduated from Owen-Withee High School in
1972. He attended District I Technical Institute in Eau Claire after graduation.
He was employed by Greenwood Home until August of this year, and was currently
working for Wittek Loggers of Withee at the time of the accident.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard (the rest of my copy was cut
