Mrs. C. D. Fowler Dies After Long Illness

Mrs. C. D. Fowler passed peacefully away at her home in this village, Tuesday after a long illness. Services are to be held at the Methodist Church at 2:00 o'clock Friday afternoon. Burial will be in Houghtonburg.

Funeral services were held for Mrs. C. D. Fowler at the Methodist church last Friday afternoon, and were attended by a large number of relatives and friends. Mrs. Waters, Mrs. Smith, and Mr. Hein sang, "Rock of Ages," "Saved by Grace," and "Jesus Lover of My Soul," with Miss Simons pianist. Rev. L. L. Litchfield, a former pastor of the church, read the scripture and offered prayer. The sermon was by Rev. E. J. Sachtjen, from the text Rev. 21:4, "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death." There were many beautiful flowers placed about the casket. Burial was in the family lot in Houghtonburg cemetery. Pallbearers were Ed Bleiler, P. A. Hemmy, M. K. Lund, C. P. Olson, A. W. Short, and W. E. Waters.

Among relatives and friends attending the rites were Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Fowler, Elizabeth, N. J.; Mr. and Mrs. M. V. Jennes, Minneapolis; Miss Ellen Raether, Pocatello, Ida.; Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Stuve, Owen; Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Rezin, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gottschalk, Wisconsin Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. John Stallard, Mrs. Rose Russell, Harry Staves, Eau Claire; Rev. and Mrs. L. L. Litchfield, Briggsville.

A feeling of deep sadness passed through this community on Tuesday afternoon, April 28, 1946, when it was learned that Mrs. C. D. Fowler had been called from her earthly home. She had been a patient sufferer for many months.

Mary Emma Staves, the last of five children in the pioneer family of William and Ellen (Stallard) Staves, was born in Kingston, Green Lake county, Wisconsin, January 30, 1865. When she was four years old the family moved onto a homestead in Jackson county, four miles west of Humbird, and here her childhood years were spent. She attended a country school near her home and continued her education at the Neillsville high school.

On February 4, 1883, she was married to Cady D. Fowler of Humbird. They engaged in farming for a time on lands which adjoined the property of her parents. They then moved to Fairchild and later to Eleva, where Mr. Fowler was employed in the lumber business. In 1904 the family moved to Humbird, and Mr. Fowler became manager of the local lumber yard.

To their union three children were born: Alice E., William O., and Dudley O. Their home was grievously saddened in 1934 when their son Dudley passed away at the height of a useful career. On February 11, 1939, the husband and father was summoned into the Great Beyond. In 1928 little Patricia Ann Fowler, a granddaughter, was called to the Heavenly Home.

Alice E., at home; William O., of Elizabeth, N. J.; Ellen Raether, a niece, of Pocatello, Idaho, who has long been a daughter of the home; two grandchildren, Mrs. Barbara Fowler Graham, Coffeyville, Kan., and Mrs. Winifred Fowler Bush, of Milwaukee; and one great grandchild survive.

In the early years of her married life, Mrs. Fowler, and all the members of her family, affiliated with the Methodist church. She became a devoted and faithful worker and leader in Christian work, never finding any task too difficult or too arduous to undertake. An unquestioning faith in the acceptance of the doctrines of her belief was an unfailing support to her throughout the long days of her illness, and she looked forward to the advent of the fuller life which she had striven to diligently to promote.
