Cady D. Fowler (With picture)
Sorrow came to all last Saturday morning when news was spread that our much respected townsman, C. D. Fowler, had passed peacefully away in his sleep. Death came presumably about 3:00 in the morning. He had been about as usual Friday, althoug the day was cold and stormy, and had retired about the usual time that evening, feeling well and happy. Although the family and friends knew his health was failing, his death came as a great shock to all who knew him.
Funeral services were held, at the Methodist church Monday afternoon and were conducted by Revs. Falhgren, Weaver of Elroy, and Vaughan of Stanley, each giving a fine tribute to the life and character of Mr. Fowler and his interest in the church. The quartet, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Waters, Rev. Weaver, and W. F. Hein, sand: "The Old Rugged Cross," "O Love that Will Not Let Me Go," and "Will There Be Any Stars in My Crown." Pallbearers were N. S. Fristad, Mahlon Lund, W. M. Rosolack, A. W. Short, H. W. Stallard, and W. E. Waters. Burial was in Houghtonburg cemetery. There were many beautiful floral tributes.
Cady D. Fowler, one of seven children of Oliver and Julia Sweet Fowler, was born in Ashtabula county, Ohio, on March 3, 1859. In the year 1867, the family moved by ox team from their Ohio home to Mentor township, in this county, locating on a tract of land near this village. This was his home until about the time of his 23rd birthday.
Feb. 4th, 1883, Mr. Fowler was united in marriage with Miss Mary E. Staves, at the farm home of the bride's parents in the town of Cleveland. To this union were born three children: Alice E., William O. and Dudley O. Mr. and Mrs. Fowler happily celebrated their golden wedding on Feb. 4, 1933, and their 56th anniversary one week previous to his death.
Two great sorrows came to the family within recent years, the deaths of their son Dudley, and granddaughter Patricia.
Mr. and Mrs. Fowler resided on their farm until 1892, when they moved to Fiarchild. He entered the employ of the N. C. Foster Lumber Co., and in 1894, moved his family to Eleva, where he had charge of the retail lumber business of that company for many years.
In 1904, after ten years at Eleva, they moved to Humbird, and since that time their permanent home has been here. He had charge of the local lumber yard under the different ownerships, until 1926, when he voluntarily retired, receiving at the time a fine testimonial for his services from the O. & N. Lumber Co., owners of the local yard.
For the major portion of his long and useful life, Mr. Fowler had been a devoted member of the Methodist church. He was secretary and treasurer of the local congregation for many years, looking after all the details of the church affairs for many years. He was also superintendent of the Sunday school until impaired eyesight and hearing caused his retirement. He served for several terms as clerk of the school district and was always interested in school matters.
Mr. Fowler was a member of the Humbird Masonic lodge, and was its treasurer for a number of years. In his younger years he was an active member of Mound camp of Modern Woodmen, and retained his membership in the organization after the local camp merged with another.
He passed from this life Feb. 11, 1939, having attained the age of 79 years, 11 months, and 9 days. His sisters and brothers all preceded him in death.
Mr. Fowler is survived by his widow; one daughter, Alice E., at home; one son, William O., and wife of Elizabeth, N. J.; two grandchildren, Barbara and Winifred Fowler; Mrs. Dudley Fowler, of Minneapolis; and a niece, Miss Ellen Raether, of Pocatello, Idaho, who has long made her home with the family; and several other relatives.
Relatives and friends attending the funeral, were; Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Fowler, Elizabeth, N. J.; Mrs. D. O. Fowler and daughters, Barbara and Winifred, Minneapolis; L. R. Staves and wife, Carroll, Ia.; Mrs. F. A. Shute, Altoona; John Stallard, A. V.
