Canfield, R. W. (1853? - 24 June 1922)

A letter from Mrs. L. R. Canfield of Tulsa, Oklahoma, gives some further details as to the life and death of R. W. Canfield, mentioned in last week’s Press.

R. W. Canfield passed away June 24,1922, after an illness of two weeks, aged 69 years. He came home from a hundred miles auto ride after his bridge contracts, became ill in the night and steadily grew worse until the end.

He came to Neillsville, Wis., when a young man and was engaged in logging and farming for a number of years. Later he became associated with Mr. Boyington of La Crosse, Col. Holway and the late James Phillips in the Wisconsin Farm Land Co.

On account of poor health he left Wisconsin in 1906, coming to Oklahoma- where he became rugged and active to the last.

Some of the largest bridges of the Oklahoma and Arkansas during the past 15 years were constructed by him.

He has left a host of friends throughout the state, who valued his keen open mind and strong character as a true friend and wise councilor.

He was married to Ida Presher of Neillsville in 1879, who survives him. Besides his three sons he has tow small granddaughters.
