Mrs. Chas. Deutsch, one of Neillsville’s oldest and most respected residents, died at the home of her son, G. C. Deutsch, Saturday night, March 3, aged 82 years and one month. Mrs. Deutsch, whose maiden name was Sophia Wilhelmina Gottfried, was born at Saarbrueck, Germany, Feb. 3, 1841. When about 7 years of age she came to America with her parents who settled on a farm in Jefferson County, Wis. After a time they moved into the city of Jefferson, and later to Janesville. In 1870 she came to Neillsville and made her home with her uncle, George Frantz, Sr. In September, 1872, she was married to Chas. Deutsch and Neillsville has been her home ever since.

Mr. Deutsch died nine years ago last November, and sine then she has lived most of the time with her son, Gustav. Mrs. Deutsch was a woman who possessed in a wonderfully large measure, the Christian virtues. Her kindness of heart was exemplified daily in her care of those about her, not only those of her own home but all about the community. As a near neighbor for a long time, the writer would pay more than a passing tribute to the memory of her beautiful life and kindly deeds. She was a charter member of the Congregational Church in Neillsville and in it for many years, before old age brought its weakness, she was a constant attendant, and her sweet influence was felt by all. She leaves to mourn her death one daughter, Amelia, Mrs. Robert Chambers of Cornell, Wis., two sons, Gustav C. Deutsch of Neillsville and Ferdinand D. Deutsch of Plaza, North Dakota. One son, Edward, died 18 years ago. She leaves also 11 grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Kate Roethe of Fennimore, Mrs. Amelia Heuchel of Neillsville and Mrs. Emma Puerner of Green Bay; also two brothers, G. H. Gottfried of Fond du Lac and George Gottfried of Chicago. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at the Congregational church, Rev. G. W. Longenecker officiating.
