Bass, Joseph Henry (31 July 1854 - 24 March 1923)

Joseph Henry Bass was born at Monroe, Wisconsin, July 31, 1854, and departed this life March 24, 1923, aged 68 years, 7 months and 23 days. He was the elder son of Joseph and Clare Rud Bass. Mr. Bass removed to Neillsville with his father’s family when he was bout 20 years of age, and was a citizen of this vicinity during the remainder of his life.

After he came to this place he was for a number of years engaged in the timber business and spent much of his time in the logging camps in this section, that being the principal industry during the earlier days throughout this vicinity. About seven years since his health became so precarious that he was obliged to cease from the arduous labors of his calling.

On November 2nd, 1881, he was united in the holy bonds of matrimony with Miss Frona McCalvy, a highly esteemed young lady of this locality and an efficient school teacher. To this union were born two children Mrs. Lida Myers and Miss Josephene Bass, both of whom, with the mother, survive the deceased.

Mr. Bass, many years since became a member of Iron Wedge Camp No. 683, Modern Woodmen of America, and remained a member of this lodge until his death.

Besides his own immediate family, the deceased leaves one brother, and three sisters, also one nephew; these are: Mrs. Jane Loy, Mrs. Sarah Niles and Mrs. John Sample, the brother Mr. Chas. Bass of Lynn; the nephew, Mr. Elmer Williams, of Superior, Wisconsin.

Mr. Bass was well known throughout this section, and had many warm friends who kindly remember him. He was a faithful husband, a good father and a respected citizen. He bore his long and painful illness with fortitude. His loved ones and former associated will cherish his memory as those of a man who had many excellent qualities.

The funeral was conducted from his late residence under the auspices of the Iron Wedge Camp No. 686, M. W. A., Rev. G. J. Donnell conducted the religious services. The burial was made at the Neillsville cemetery Tuesday afternoon, March 27th.
