Southard, Helen A. (16 Mar 1846 - 15 Feb 1924)

Mrs. Asa Southard died at her home in this city Friday forenoon, Feb. 15, 1924, aged 77 years and 11 months. Her death was due to paralysis. She had not been in good health for ten years, and for the past two years had been almost helpless, but had been kindly cared for by her children who were here.

Mrs. Southard, whose maiden name was Helen Amanda Townsend was born at Bradford, Maine, March 16, 1846. She grew to womanhood there and was married at North Bradford July 3, 1868. They lived there for about 9 years, then moved to Aroostoock Co., Maine, where they lived nearly four years. They came to Clark County, Wis. in 1881 and lived on farms in this locality for five years, then moved to Neillsville, securing a home on the North Side, which still remains the family residence. Mr. Southard died about 14 years ago.

Mrs. Southard was a woman of the pioneer type, brought up in ways of the old New England home. She devoted her life to the care of home and husband and children, and still found time, in her younger years, to be helpful to friends and neighbors.

She leaves seven children: Mrs. May Rose of Neillsville; Sarah, Mrs. Fred Elder of Seattle; Warren at home; William, just returned from Seattle; Mrs. Adelia Jennings of Aberdeen, Wash.; John, at present in the hospital at Seattle and George, best known as tom, at home.

Deceased leaves also 15 grandchildren, also 3 brothers and a sister, in Maine.

The funeral is held this Wednesday afternoon at the home, Rev. Longenecker officiating.
