Wells, Alberta (30 APR 1847 - 25 Mar 1924)

Mrs. M. N. Wells died suddenly Monday evening, March 25, 1924, at her home on Grand Avenue, her death being due to a stroke of apoplexy. Some time ago she had suffered a similar stoke, from which she had recovered sufficiently to be about most of the time, but which had materially affected her health and strength. She had been tenderly cared for since her first illness, but this did not avail to prevent the fatal stroke.

Mrs. Wells, whose maiden name was Alberta Pettingill, was born at Morristown, Lamoile Co., Vermont, April 30, 1847. She lived there till she was eight years old, when she came west with her parents, who settled near Neosho, living there till she was about 17 years old. The family then went east, and for a time lived in the state of New York. They returned to Wisconsin again and settled on a farm near their former home at Neosho. There she was married to Matthew N. Wells Oct. 23, 1867. Mr. and Mrs. Wells lived there four years, and then in April 1871, they moved to Clark County, Wis., and bought land in Pine Valley west of Black River, which they developed into a beautiful home. Eight years ago they sold the farm and moved to the home in the city where she died. Mrs. Wells had the ideal qualities for the work she had to do in life. In meeting the privations and difficulties of pioneer life, she was brave and cheerful and faced her duties without fear or discouragement. She was efficient in the work of the home, helpful and social in the life of the community and ready to serve those who needed help. She was a charter member of the local W. R. C. and served in practicaly every office in the Corps. She was a true and faithful wife and mother, one whose example in life is worthy to follow in every way. In her early married life she was united with the Methodist Church, and led a practical Christian life.

She is survived by her husband, two sons, W. C. Wells of Hamilton, Mont. and Burton H. Wells of Neillsville, and one daughter, Hattie, Mrs. Ed Lloyd of Pine Valley. She leaves also 13 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and one brother, F. E. Pettingill of Green Bay.

The funeral will be held at the Methodist Church Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Wm. Walder officiating. The Woman's Relief Corps will attend in a body.
