A Happy New Year! Miss Laura Grousbeck, of Levis, was the guest of Mrs. Nellie Snyder the first of the week.

George Trogner, Jr. of Neillsville, visited with friends the fore part of the week.

Cyrus Snyder, of Pine Valley, was the guest of George Whalen Monday.

The recent rain was very welcomed as some of the wells in this vicinity were giving out.

It is the desire of your correspondent to extend to the Republican and Press and all of its readers the compliment of the season, a happy new year and a bright future.

Mrs. Lizzie Lincoln, of Loyal, was a sojourner among us last week. She is at present engaged weaving carpets and anyone that has anything to be done in that line, will do well to give her a trial.

Rev. J.A. Bolton and daughter Maggie, of Humbird, visited with friends and relatives at this place last week.

A. Benedict took in the sights at Loyal Monday evening.

Mrs. George Lindsley spend New Years at Pittsville.

Miss Effie Gibson went to Humbird last Friday on a short visit to relatives.

Mrs. H.A. King returned home Friday from an extended visit to Washington.

Ed Bailey has accepted a position as engineer at Hogan and expects to move soon.

George Lawrence entertained the young people Saturday evening. George is a musician and is now the owner of thirteen different musical instruments, and handles them with great skill.

S.W. Bolton, D.R. Rogers, accompanied by their wives and Chauncey Fowler, spent New Years at Humbird. It is rumored that York Center is to have a Free Methodist Church in the near future.

Steven, Thank you for this posting! Although I don't know how Laura Grousbeck connects with my line, I'd bet she does. My great-great grandfather, Lewis Almon HICKS, was a nephew of George Grousbeck of Neillsville, WI.

Lewis (who may have been known as Almon) moved his family from Windham County, VT to Clark County, WI in the late 1860's. He and his family appear in the 1870 census of Pine Valley at Neillsville.

Any chance of finding a newspaper report regarding the death of Lewis / Almon Hicks? He was supposedly "thrown from a horse and killed"; location unknown; one record says he died March 1893.
