Sommerfeld, Emil (14 July 1889 - ? April 1923)

On Thursday, Emil Sommerfel, of the town of Grant met instant death by being struck by a falling tree, while cutting timber on Alfred Drescher’s farm. Mr. Sommerfeld and Mr. Drescher were working together, cutting trees; two trees that they attempted to fell lodged in another small basswood tree. They cut this tree, expecting the three trees to fall together in a certain direction, but the three trees swung off sideways. The two men started to run as soon as the trees began to fall, but unfortunately ran in the same direction that the trees fell. Mr. Sommerfeld was struck on the neck and killed almost instantly, but fell clear from the trees and his body was not mangled in any way. Mr. Drescher received a glancing blow on the shoulder and arm, but was not seriously injured.

Deceased was born in Russian Poland, July 14, 1889. In 1913 he started out for America and came directly to Neillsville. He found work on farms in the town of Grant, much of the time making his home with Louis Drescher for whom he worked a great deal. He bought eighty acres of land near by and was gradually improving it and had it nearly paid for. He was much like by every one in the community, because of his industry, honesty and general upright character. He had no known relatives in this country. His father is still living in the new republic of --Rest cut off
