Hake, Eli (28 Dec. 1851 - 24 May 1923)

Eli Hake, a prominent farmer of the town of Grant, died suddenly at the home of his daughter at Ft. Atkinson May 24. He had been in his usual health up to about six weeks ago, when he began to complain about his heart troubling him. It did not seem to be serious, however, and about two weeks ago he set out for Ft. Atkinson to visit his daughters. He was taken suddenly ill on the train and continued to grow weaker till he died. Eli Hake was born in Jefferson, Wis., Dec. 28, 1851, and lived there nearly 50 years. On July 8, 1874, he was married to Ena Mary Schlickermyer. They moved from Jefferson County 22 years ago and bought a farm in the town of Grant. Mrs. Hake died Sept. 22, 1916. Mr. Hake continued to make his home on the farm.

To Mr. and Mrs. Hake were born five children, all of whom survive, namely: Malina, Mrs. Fred Steinke, of Ft. Atkinson, Nellie, Mrs. John Daniels of Whitewater, Esther, Mrs. Henry Hubing of Gelndive, Montana, Rush Hake and Warren Hake living on their farms in Grant, near this city. Mr. Hake was one of the our best citizens. By his industry and honesty he made a place for himself in the esteem of this community. He was a progressive farmer, a good neighbor, a kind husband and father, and will be greatly missed not only by his own children, but by all in the community who knew him.

The funeral was held at Ft. Atkinson, Sunday, May 27, burial taking place in Evergreen Cemetery in that city.
