July 25, 1870, Ed Merritt was enumerating the official census for Mentor twp., Clark Co., Wisconsin.   After finishing with the Chauncy Young residence, he spoke with twenty three year old H. T. Valentine who worked in the pineries as did many of his neighbors.  It was noted that he was born in Connecticut, but both his parents were born in New York. Although Thom was only twenty three years old, he had an estate valued at $500. $1 in 1870 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $21.46 in 2022, an increase of $20.46 over 152 years which reflects his possession at $10, 230 by current rates.

Ed finish collecting his data for the twenty-one year old school teacher, Martha Tripp, July 27th and the next day, the first home he visited was that of the Orin & Alvira Wilson. They had two small girls, 4yr. old Harriet and 2 yr. old Laura as well as a twenty-three year old domestic servant, Mary Ottwell. It is doubtful that Ed had any idea that two hundred and thirty-nine days later Mary would become the wife of Henry T. Valentine.  They were married in Humbird, Wisconsin at the home of Bidwell Alderman, by David B. Travis, Esq. March 24, 1872.  They had a son named Floyd.
