NEILLSVILLE PRESS (Neillsville, Clark County, Wis.) 06/12/1924 Jacques, Anna M.
(1 Jan 1837 - 6 JUN 1924) Anna Marie Jacques
(nee Spaulding) was born at Fort Howard, now Green Bay, Wis., Jan.
1, 1837. She was the first child of English decent born in that
region, and at her death, June 6th, 1924, aged 87 years, 6 months
and 7 days, was the oldest living white person born in
Wisconsin. Her father, Samuel
Spaulding, operated a saw mill at or near Green Bay for several
years. In 1843 he moved with his family to Waukesha Co. and settled
on a farm. In 1861 she and George F. Jacques were married, and
about 1873 moved to Northern Wis., where he followed the timber
business for several years. In 1884 they came to Neillsville, Clark
County, where she resided until her death, except that for several
years after the death of her husband in 1910, she spent a part of
each year in Milwaukee with her daughter, Mrs. F. O. Balch. She was a student
of nature and an artist of considerable ability, her pictures
having been exhibited with favorable mention in the Milwaukee art
galleries. She followed her art work until a few months before her
death, and some of her best pictures were painted during the last
ten years. She was respected
and loved by all who knew her. She is survived by her daughter,
Mrs. F. O. Balch, her son, George L. Jacques, five grandchildren
and five great-grandchildren. The funeral was
held at the home Monday afternoon, Rev. G. W. Longenecker
officiating. © Every submission is protected by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act
