LaTart Elementary School
Beaver Township, Clark County, Wisconsin

Steven LaTart owned property in Sections 7 and 8 of Beaver Township, Clark County, WI. For a time, that area was known by his surname and the LaTart School was built there. The families of Anton & Mary Guskey, John Nora Hughes and Richard & Clara Walters were his neighbors. He was a Canadian born farmer and lived to be one of Clark County's oldest pioneers. He married Julia Johnson who was born May 8, 1864 died 2 months after her 43rd birthday, July 11, 1907. They became the parents of at least one daughter, Mabel, who was born in 1895. When Mabel was sixteen, she married the neighbor's boy, Joseph Walters. He was the son of Mary and step-son of Anton Guskey. On the same day, Joseph's half sister, Mary Guskey was also married and the couples had a double wedding ceremony. Joseph and Mabel Walters then lived on the LaTart farm.

Responses:
My mother (Ethel Arp) made this handwritten list of the students
pictured above. The teacher was Miss Lois Cole (Johnson). At
bottom, she wrote: “33 students for all 8 grades.” The list
was written some time in the mid- to late 70s.
