I say, Penny, why didn't you do a little bragging about this so we might have known it sooner? With apologies for the delay. The times take pleasure in publishing this little story of praise for the inimitable Coach "Penny" Barkley. It was written by the Milwaukee Journal State Sport Round-up columnist, Cleon Walfoort, and appeared May 10, six weeks after the winning of the state Class C championship by Barkley's team.
Mr. J. Barkley…..his Pardeeville high school team earned the distinction of winning the first state Class C Basketball championship--Born in Humbird, Wis., 29 years ago to George Albert and Minnie (Schumacher) Barkley…attended high school there and competed in basketball and track--got a bachelor's degree in education at Eau Claire Teacher's graduating in 1928…earned letters in basketball, track and baseball, captaining the first two squads in his junior year…Went to Pardeeville High to teach science and to coach basketball and baseball…In seven years of competition in the Columbia County Little Seven conference his cage teams have won 58 and lost 10 games…Won 18 of 19 games this year, sweeping the conference, district and state titles…beat Middleton, a team that was rated with most of the Class B schools, in the state finals after studying the big red team expertly for two days…Prefers Golf and baseball for his own recreation….swears by the Chicago Cubs and thinks Lon Waneke is tops among the pitchers…Is married and has one child.
