AUTO KILLS LAD NEAR THORP
Harold Smith, aged 9 years was killed Saturday, afternoon on Highway 16 about 5 miles out of Thorp, being struck by a car, driven by a Chicago man named Pulkinen. The boy was riding on a wagon of the patrolman and jumped off when he came opposite his own home and started to run to the side of the road when he was struck by the car which turned off to pass the patrol wagon. Sheiff Kutchera and District Attorney Devos went to Thorp Monday where an inquest was held before Justice Lee Snyder and a jury, who found that Mr. Pulkinen was not criminally liable, it appearing that he blew his horn as he approached and that the boy jumped directly in front of the car. It is said however, that the boys parents will bring civil suit for damages.
