Rode, Russell Nils (18 March 1927 – 26 March 2022)
Russell Nils Rode died peacefully on Saturday, March 26, 2022, at the Clark
County Rehab and Living Center.
He is survived by his sister, Joann Manthey of Minneapolis, three sons, Alex
(Brenda Armstrong), Richard (Carol) Rode and Greg (Dyanna) Rode, 12
grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife,
Clarice and his daughter, Margaret Steinbeck.
Russell was born in Bemidji, MN on March 18, 1927, the son of Nils Rode and
Margaret Halling. After graduation he joined the US Navy during WWII. He
separated from the Navy shortly after the war ended and he settled in
Minneapolis, while he was there, he went to school to be a welder and also
worked at the Wonder Bakery where he met his future wife, Clarice Langiewicz.
They were married in Clarice’s home town Stanley, on April 15, 1950. He rejoined
the Navy again. For the next 20 years he was stationed in Hawaii, Wisconsin,
Indiana, California and Rhode Island, after two tours in Korea and three tours
in Vietnam he retired in 1969. After many years he finally settled in Withee.
Russell enjoyed wood working, fishing and feeding the birds. He was a member of
the Knights of Columbus, he helped out at the Old School in Owen, and was a
member of the County Zoning Boards.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, at the
Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Owen at 7:00 P.M. Visitation for family and
friends will be from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Military rites will be conducted by the
Owen American Legion Post# 123 and the Owen-Withee Vets Club following the
memorial service.
