OLD LUMBERJACK VISITS COUNTY
About 40 years ago I. B. Searseth, Decora Prairie man was a lumberjack in the pine woods of Clark and other northern counties, notes the Galesville Republican. That is, he spent the winter months in camps, returning in the spring with his winter savings in a roll of bills. It wasn’t much as a dollar a day was getting big pay in those days.
Last week Mr. Searseth, accompanied by his son, Ed, into the family car and drove up to the old logging tracts above Neillsville. They went on to Loyal, Thorp, Withee, Marshfield and Cadott.
Where once the tall pines stood are now fertile fields. Even the stumps have fine homes and great barns, herds of sleek cattle, and everything that goes to make up a modern Wisconsin farm. All along the route are district schoolhouse not the little red schoolhouses of former days, but large, well lighted and modernly equipped school buildings.
The travelers found many fine trees loaded with fruit. The spring frosts did not hit that part of the state. Re-print in Milwaukee Journal.
