Editor, New-Herald: With regard to your editorial of November 21 ("Respect
others and their land:): I think the key to getting permission to hunt on a
farmer's land is your statement that "if you ask,: permission will be granted.
I cut firewood and logs 22 miles from Eau Claire on 80 acres and have some bow
hunters visit almost every evening. They park on our trails and always offer to
help load wood or some other chore to compensate for hunting, Plus they keep an
eye on the buildings.
In eight years of working there, we've had only one small incident of vandalism
by some juveniles. More Often or not, a misplaced piece of logging equipment is
located and returned to the cabin.
I agree that some land should be shared. But just as with snowmobile trails and
now the proposed use by all-terrain vehicles, some responsibility for the upkeep
should be borne by the users - because the owner pays the taxes.
I don't think city dwellers would like it if farmer or hobbyists would come to
town and use their barbecue grill or picnic table.
