NEILLSVILLE PRESS (Neillsville, Clark County, Wis.) 09/19/1929 Shummel, James (6
APR 1869 - 15 Sep 1929) James Shummel, one
of the old residents of Neillsville, Clark County, Wis., passed
away at his home on North Grand Ave., at 6 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 15,
1929. Mr. Shummel had been in poor health about a year. On Aug. 21
he underwent an operation at the hospital in Eau Claire and a week
later a blood transfusion was given, but his strength was so low,
he failed to make any gain. He was brought home last week and all
that could be done to make him comfortable was done. James T. Shummel
was born in Buffalo, N.Y., April 6, 1869, and was therefore 60
years, 5 months and 9 days old at his death. He was the son of
George Shummel Sr. and Lottie Buss Shummel, now deceased. He came
to Neillsville when 5 years old and has lived in this locality ever
since. He worked in the lumber camps, in saw mills and on log
drives, as a young man and became also a most efficient farm
manager. For 10 or 12 years he was a manager of the Ring Stock
Farm, and was manager on the Austin farm for many years. He is said
to have been the first man in this locality to operate a grain
binder. For the past 12 years before his health failed, he worked
in the Condensery. Mr. Shummel was
considered a most reliable and upright man, always to be depended
upon in very way. He was quiet in his manner and although he came
up through the rough surroundings of the early days, he was always
a thorough gentleman. Mr. Shummel was
married in Neillsville, April 25, 1899 to Miss Lizzie Wegner, who
survives him. He leaves no children. His mother died
when some of the children were young and they were adopted into
others families. Dan Rausch of Granton is a brother of deceased;
Emma Hendren, who was adopted by Rev. and Mrs. W. T. Hendren, was a
sister, died some years ago. Another sister, Mrs. Esther Hutchinson
is still living; a brother, George Shummel Jr., died a few years
ago. Deceased was a
member of the Odd Fellows and Woodman Lodges. The funeral will
be held Wednesday afternoon at the Congregational Church, Rev. G.
W. Longenecker, officiating. © Every submission is protected by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act
