COURIER (Thorp, Clark County, Wis.) 07/30/1925 Smith, Harold
(1916? - 25 Jul 1925) Harold Smith, the
nine-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Smith, who reside three miles
west of the village (Thorp, Clark County, Wis.), was accidentally
killed on Saturday afternoon last on the highway, nearly in front
of his home, by a Buick Roadster, driven by Carl Pulkinen of
Chicago. The car was occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Pulkinen and another
young lady and the party was on their way to Chicago. As the car
approached the fatal spot about 300 feet east of the bride crossing
the Northfork River, the boy, dragging a small cart, attempted to
cross the road after the driver of the auto had sounded a warning.
The victim was struck in the side of the body and head by the
fender of the car and instantly killed. On Monday a jury consisting
of H. Holzhausen, A. J. Hansman, John A. Rabska, Thomas Dygart and
A. O. Rhea was empanelled by Justice of the Peace, L. J. Snyder,
who upon investigating the matter thoroughly, found the cause
accidental and unavoidable under the circumstances connected with
the manner in which the boy was killed, thus exonerating the driver
of the car from all blame. District Attorney, A. L. Devos,
conducted the examination of the witnesses in behalf of the State.
The funeral of the boy took place on Tuesday morning from St.
Bernard's Church. © Every submission is protected by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act
