10 YEARS AGO January 28, 1993 Notification was recently received that Chippewa County municipalities will receive state grants to help pay the cost of local recycling programs. The village of Boyd will receive $4,124.65 and the city of Stanley will receive $11,097.70.

Stanley-Boyd High School representatives on the Cloverbelt All-Conference Choir are Shawn LaChappelle, Jacob Isenberger, Lauri Westman, Jesse Luoma, Paul Reith, Holly Pozdell, Jessica VanDenHeuvel and Kelly Feltz.

Dennis Goettl, former Stanley- Boyd Oriole standout and UW-LA Crosse football star, has signed a contract to play football for the Bologna Warriors of the- Italian Football League.

Predator wrestling coach Lee LaFlamme chalked up his 200th win when his team defeated Altoona/Fall Creek, 52-10.

25 YEARS AGO January 26, 1978 Bill and Connie Meyer, formerly from the Wausau area, have leased the former Stanley Bakery building and will be opening Bill's Bakery on Jan. 31. A complete line of bakery goods will be offered, including all types,of breads and rolls, and decorated cakes for all occasions.

Ground breaking ceremonies for the new clinic at Victory Memorial Hospital were held Monday afternoon. Participating were Neil Baker, board member, Lee Olkowski, hospital ad- ministrator, Harold Peterson, board member, and Dr. Roberto and Dr. Myrna Casing.

King Lee Gilles and Queen Ann Shilts will reign over the winter ball, which will be held Friday at the Stanley-Boyd High School. Members of their court are Deb Dusick,Terry Zais, Ron Horban, Deb Gustafson, Jim Hodowanic, Sandy Bergman, Randy Walker and Mary Wierznasz.

40 YEARS AGO January 31, 1963 The Richter Boarding House, 247 Third Ave., is soon to acquire its third owner in 50 years after being sold by Mrs. R.B. Richter. Mr. and Mrs. Carl W. Johnson, recently of Thorp, will take possession of the property to- morrow. The boarding house was purchased by the Richters in April 1933 from her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Sattler, who had built the establishment about 1913. At the time, Mrs. Richter was interested in buying the Stanley Hotel because that building had been built by her father and uncle, Klauck and Sattler, in 1898.

There were plenty of eager fishermen on the ice of Chapman Lake Sunday. The weather was perfect,but as a result, this year's Stanley-Boyd- Thorp-Cadott Rod and Gun Club's fishing contest went into history as the second in a row when nobody caught any fish.

Robert Kluck, a member of the Black Creek 4-H Club, appeared with 4-H Club Agent Willard Olson as a ,guest of the Farm and Home program over WEAU-TV on Jan. 21. The subject that was discussed was safety.

50 YEARS AGO January 29, 1953 Leslie Lockhart was the recipient of the Outstanding Senior Agriculture Award from Elmer Machler at the Parents-Sons Night Program held by the Stanley FFA at the high school auditorium.

Soo Passenger Trains I and 2 will terminate service in Stanley on Feb. 15. The Public Service Commission recently granted permission to the Wisconsin Central Railroad to discontinue the service. The Stanley High School band, 56 strong, will present its Silver Jubilee concert at the high school auditorium on Feb. 1. 60 YEARS AGO January 29, 1943 Paul Brandvold, who was born and raised in Stanley, has taken quarters with the South Side Motor Company where he will conduct an up-to-date vulcanizing business.

British General Montgomery's Eighth Army was still pursuing Rommel's German army toward Tripoli last weekend with indications that the decisive clash of the war in North Africa is near at hand Allied jungle forces mopped up the last of the Japanese forces, after cracking the last enemy stronghold in Papua, New Guinea, with the capture of Sanananda village. A few tattered remnants of the Japanese invasion force of 15,000 remain to be disposed of.

70 YEARS AGO January 27, 1933 No issue available due to damage.

100 YEARS Ago January 31, 1903 Roy Luther had his first railroad luck last week when he got the large toe of one foot under the wheel of freight car, completely separating him from that member. He hasn't done (continuation unfound!)
