Hewett, May (1870? - 20 Augl 1909)
Mrs. D. B. Travis of Eau Claire sends us the following notice from the Burlington Gazette, of the death of a former resident of this place:
"Shortly after noon occurred the death of Mrs. Charles D. Hewett at her home on Prospect Hill (Burlington, Iowa). The end came as a release from a long and painful illness, which the deceased lady bore with unusual patience and fortitude, and unending good cheer even tot he last. An affliction of the heart which threatened to cut short her life many times during the past year, finally brought about her demise. The death of Mrs. Hewett is particularly sad, from the fact that it occurred upon the twenty-first anniversary of her wedding day. On. Aug. 20, 1888, she became the bride of Charles D. Hewett of Eau Claire, coming immediately to Burlington, a bride of eighteen, to make her future home. Mrs. Hewett is survived by her husband, one of the best railroad engineers of this city, and her 18-year-old daughter, Myrtle; her mother, Mrs. Godfrey Dawe of Eau Claire, and a sister also survive.
The news of the death of Mrs. Hewett was a shock to her host of friends. While it was known that her condition was serious, but very few persons realized that the end was so near. About two months ago it was thought that she could not long resist her affliction but to the surprise of her friends her health seemed to return to her in a marvelous way, and up to a week ago she was able to be about the city in her carriage and receive her friends in her home. She was taken with a return of the malady and it was seen that her death could not long be warded away. Her maiden name was Miss May Webster. She was born in Humbird, Clark County, Wis., thirty-nine years ago, where her family was a prominent one. She was a member of several lodges, among them the Eastern Star, Court of Honor, and the Ladies' Auxiliary to the B. of L. E., of which her husband is a prominent member."
Mrs. Hewett's death occurred on Aug. 20, 1909. She was well known to all the older residents here.
