Castner, Russell (4 Jan 1901 - 11 OCT 1924)

A sad accident occurred last Friday when Russell Castner, the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Castner, fell from a tree which he was pruning, a distance of thirty feet. Both arms were broken and he suffered severe internal injuries which resulted in his death Saturday evening. He was unconscious most of the time until his death. His parents and Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Castner rushed to his bedside and were with him until the last. The body was brought home and the funeral was held from the Methodist Church.

Russell Albert Castner, a graduate of the University of Wis. died from severe injuries received in falling from an oak tree a distance of 35 feet at Delavan, Wis., Oct. 11th, 1924 at the Elkhorn Hospital.

The deceased was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Castner, born in the township of Loyal, Clark County, Wis., Jan. 4th, 1901.

He was a graduate of the Loyal High School in the year of 1919. While a Junior there he took part in and won the Oratorical Contest at Spencer in which Loyal took part.

He entered the College of Agriculture at the University of Wisconsin in the fall of 1919, where he attended school for three years, then accepted a position at La Crosse in the Shelby Cow Testing Association in 1922. One of his first summers at Madison he spent in the dairy barn there where he was given complete charge of the herd.

In 1923 he reentered the University as a senior in the College of Agriculture, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree Aug. 6th, 1924. He was a very energetic boy working his way through college, gaining hosts of friends on his way. A great deal of his spare time was spent in analyzing different kinds of soils throughout Wisconsin to find out what kind of differed kinds of plants thrived best on.

As he leaves this world he not only leaves a host of friends and relatives but a great many honors both in school and out.

He leaves to mourn his loss, a father and mother, grandmother, five brothers, Forest R., Harry F., La Follette J. Theodore R., and Royal A., and four sisters, Mrs. Irvin Mengel, Hazel I., Nina A. and Grace Ione.

Those from out of town who attended the funeral were: Mrs. Frank Conahan and daughter Helen from Madison, Mrs. Solon Davis and daughter Ora, Mr. and Mrs. Al Mayba, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Lee, Mrs. Myron Osgood, Mr. and Mrs. Kerney Davis, all of Granton, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Mortimer of York, Mrs. Charles Schultz and Mrs. Charles Hanson of Colby, Mrs. Frank Andrews and Mrs. Albert Shanks of Greenwood.
