Elmhorst Family, Walter
John Henning, Sr. and wife Catherina Henning came from Schlesswig, Germany to America landing in Calumet County, Wis., and in 1874 they came to Clark county and located in the Town of Fremont on Section 27. They had eight children, John Jr., Jacob, Herman, August, Anna, Mary, Kate and Bertha who died as a little girl in 1902.
John Henning Jr. bough the place from his father and mother. They moved to Marshfield.
John Jr. came to America when he was two years old with his folks. He was married to Anna Speiser on Dec. 5, 1901. They lived on what is now called the August Lindow place. He sold that to August Lindow and bought his father's place. They had five daughters, Dora, Ella (Mrs. Walter Elmhorst), Alma (Mrs. Everett Schilling), Helen Sladek and Alice (Mrs. Gordon Ritter), and three sons died in infancy.
On Jan. 6, 1927, John Jr. died and Mrs. Anna Henning farmed until spring of 1941. Mrs. Ella and husband, Walter Elmhorst, rented the place for four years, and Mrs. Anna Henning moved to her home in Chili. On March 26, 1945, Mrs. Anna Henning died and Mr. Walter Elmhorst and wife Ella bought the place in June of 1945 and are still farming.
