Peters Family, William

My father, William Peters, was born in 1854, and educated in Gruenwald, Germany, where as a young man he was employed at the Krupp Arms Factory. He was also a shoemaker and carver of wooden shoes.

In 1884, when he was thirty years old, he came to America with his father and settled at Forest Junction, Wis. My mother, Anna Emmers, was born in Sheboygan Falls on Aug. 29, 1865. She moved to Forest Junction with her parents at age 6. In 1891 she married William Peters. Shortly after their marriage they moved to a wild tract of land north of the village of Chili, Clark County, Wis., purchased from the Necedah Land Co. My father had to cut his own road to the farm as it was all brush in 1892. My parents cleared the land, put up buildings, raised six children and lived there all of their lives. They told of many hardships, of building rail fences to keep in three cows, a few sheep, and chickens. Woven wire was unheard of then. Father had to work in the wood in winter to make money to keep them during the summer time when he cleared the land.

They had 54 years of happy married life. Father died at 92 and mother at 88 years.
