Duane Schroeder, 68, Waverly, Iowa, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, of natural causes, while traveling in Romania. Funeral services were held ay 1 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 29, at the Wartburg College Chapel, Waverly. Burial was in Harlington Cemetery, Waverly.

Duane Schroeder was born on June 15, 1936, in Marshfield, to Roy and Alene [nee Stock] Schroeder. He graduated from Loyal High School in 1954. He then enrolled at Wartburg College in Waverly. As a student he serves as a student sportswriter, managing editor sports editor and business manager for the Wartburg Trumpet from 1954 to 1958, and was a part-time statistician in the Wartburg public relations office. Former public relations director Norm Fintel offered him a full-time job the day after he graduated from Wartburg in 1958. He married Mary Ellen Mueller on Aug. 9, 1958, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Loyal. He worked at Wartburg College as news and sports information director for more than 42 years. He created Wartburg’s first full-time publicity office called the News Bureau at the time. The department became Wartburg’s current communication and marketing department. He was part of nearly 400 football games and more than 1,500 basketball and baseball games in his career as SID. After receiving a call from Warren Berg of Luther College, he joined the College Sports Information Directors Association [CoSIDA] in 1959, as a charter member and attended the organization’s first 10 conventions at the Bismark Hotel, Chicago. The association honored him with the Warren Berg Award, its highest honor, in 1998. He stepped down from his sporta duties at Wartburg in the spring of 2000, ending the second longest tenure in CoSIDA history. He also played key role in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference [IIAC] for a significant part of his career, serving as secretary-treasurer from 1981 to 2001. In 2002, he was inducted into the Wartburg College Athletic Hall of Fame. He will be awarded the Wartburg Medal posthumously for his significant contributions to the life of Wartburg College. He was active in service to the Waverly community. He served on the board of directors of the Bremer County Historical Society and as publicist for Bremer-Black Hawk Habitat for Humanity. He was also part of Community Builders and a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Waverly.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen, Waverly; his son, Randall [Lenore] Schroeder, Waverly; two grandsons, Lukas and Nikolas Schroeder, both of Waverly; on sister, JoAn [Ed] Newton, Bradenton, Fla.; two nephews, Curt [Shelly] Schwieso, Minneapolis, and Dean [Kimberly] Schwieso, Pineville, La.; and one niece, Pam [Jess] Hertzler, Marshfield.

Memorials May be directed to the Duane Schroeder Memorial Scholarship at Wartburg College.
