1600 Bushels of Grain Destroyed.
West Fremont -- Fire, caused by lightning, razed a large barn and a granary on the Henry/Nebel farm, 1 ½ mile west of Chili, at midnight Monday.
Loss of the building and their contents was roughly estimated today as between $3,000 and $4,000, partially covered by insurance.
The barn, a modern structure 38 feet wide and 78 feet long, was filled with hay and contained a milking machine, three sets of harness, a herd sire, 2 calves, and about 150 chickens.
The herd sire was saved, but the calves and chickens were burned to death.
The granary, also a large building, contained 1,600 bushels of grain. A stave silo was also destroyed by the flames, but a machine shed near the other buildings was saved. Volunteers had already moved the machinery from it.
The heat of the flames scorched paint on the farm buildings of Anton Grimm, across the road from the Nebel farm, but the Nebel residence was not in serious danger.
A large number of neighbors gathered at the Nebel farm to aid in preventing the spread of the flames and to save as much property as could be rescued from the fire.
