DORCHESTER HERALD (Dorchester, Clark County, Wis.) 02/25/1916 Henkel, Clarence
(1900? - Feb 1916) (Marshfield
Times) Clarence, the
fifteen-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Gustav Henkel of Colby, while
attempting to board a northbound freight train for his home at
eleven o'clock Friday evening, was fatally injured by being run
over by the train. The scene of the accident was near the Soo line
water tank where everything at this time of the year is covered
with ice. No one knows definitely how the accident happened, but it
is supposed that he lost his footing on the ice and fell coming in
contact with the brakebeam or some other obstacle which threw him
under the wheels of the caboose. A brakeman who had
just gone in the caboose felt a slight jar, which was caused by the
train passing over the boy's body, and he set the air brakes tight,
bringing the train to a stop. He then jumped of and discovered the
injured boy lying across the track. The body of the
deceased was badly mangled, but his legs were not severed from his
body as rumored about the city shortly after the accident happened.
He suffered other injuries to his arms and face that made hope for
his recovery impossible from the outset. The boy's parents
arrived Saturday morning from Colby to take charge of the remains
and to make funeral preparations. The body was taken to Colby
Saturday where the funeral services were held Tuesday. © Every submission is protected by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act
