He was born March 10, 1930, in Owen, the third son of James Jr. and Ida (Vander Wegen) Devine. Pete attended Owen Elementary, Poppe Country School and graduated from Owen High School in 1949, where he excelled in sports.
On Dec. 15, 1930, Pete married Charlotte Helene Scherf, his high school sweetheart. They took over Charlotte's parents' farm in Longwood and began their family. They moved to their home on the seventh hole in 1956 when Pete became a permanent employee at Western Condensing. He continued to work for the company, advancing as truck driver and dispatcher in Owen, plant supervisor in Plover and eventually plant manager in Appleton. Pete retired from what was then known as Western Dairies after 44 years of service. As a young man, he also had worked for his good friend, Hank Mauel at Hank's and his father's dairy.
In his younger days, Pete participated in many local sports teams, including the Withee Blue Jays and Mauel's Maulers. There is no doubt golf was his favorite sport as he built two homes and raised a family on the Meadowview Golf Course. He also enjoyed being outside taking care of his yard or watching birds. He treasured time spent with his family.
There is not a day Pete will not be missed by his wife, Charlotte, and his eight children, Cindy (Rod) Quelle of Phillips, Lynda (Tony Gechas) Devine of Rhinelander, Bill (Sue) Devine of Owen, Tim (Carol) Devine of Stetsonville, Mary (Jerry) Devine-Giese of Almond, Janine (Kent) Gaede of Stevens Point, Karen (John) Jahnel of Appleton and Michelle (Mike) Devine-Giese of Oshkosh.
Pete enjoyed being part of a large family. He leaves behind his siblings, Bob (Bobbie) Devine of Withee, Theresa (Joe) Pawlak of Thorp, Burt (Joyce) Devine of Sussex, Janice (Lyle) Johnson of Marshfield, Marilyn (Boone) Brey of Unity, Tom (Sandi) Devine of Nevada City, Calif., Ted (Mary Ann) Devine of Green Bay and Kay (Jack) Parker of Rothschild.
He also left behind 19 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, who all enjoyed spending time with their grandpa. He loved crawling about with the toddlers and teasing and playing ball with them as they grew older.
Pete has been reunited in heaven with his parents; his adored older brother, Bill; and his younger brothers, Dave, Pit, Muggs and Dude.
