LeClaire, Elsie/Susie Genevive (19 JUN 1883 - 17 OCT 1925)

(Cadott Sentinel)

(The micro-film was cut off on the left side, so this obit is paraphrased as best possible)

Death has again entered our midst, in taking its victim, has left the community in sorrow. Mrs. George LeClaire, who has been subject to ? trouble for the past three years, died suddenly at her home her on Saturday afternoon. Her death came as a great shock to her family and friends. She had been down to the barn in the morning, and, although not feeling quite well, was about the house until only a few minutes before her death. Her sudden death was brought about through heart failure caused from a goiter operation years ago.

Elsie G. Smythe was born at Ableman, Wis., June 19, 1883, and her she spent her childhood days, graduating from the high school and later successfully engaged as a teacher in Dorchester and Ableman.

She was married to Mr. LeClaire at ? on Sept. 6, 1910, and he became engaged as a rural mail carrier and they made their home at Dorchester, where their two daughters, Audrey and Wilma were born. In 1920 they moved to Marshfield and in July 1923 to Cadott, engaging in the grocery business in the former D. H. McKenzie store.

Mrs. LeClaire was yet a young woman, only being 42 years, 3 months and 22 days old at the time of her death. During the two years that they resided in this community, her beautiful character and excellent ? had won for her a host of friends by whom she was highly regarded for her amiable qualities, and to whom her sudden death comes as a great blow.

She is survived by her sorrowing daughters, Audrey and Wilma. Her mother, Mrs. Anna …rge and one sister, Pauline, who reside at Ableman, and another sister, Mrs. T. J. McGlynn of Owen, also survive.

Funeral services were held at 6:30 ? morning at St. Rose of Lima Catholic church, Rev. A. J. Aurit officiating, and the remains were taken to Baraboo, Wis., where interment was made in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery there.

Among those from away who came to Cadott to attend her funeral were: Mrs. Anna Smyth and George Smythe of Ableman; Mr. and Mrs. J. ? of Baraboo; Andrew, Rober and Charles Kiefer, Miss Mary Kiefer, Mrs. Joe Pietrowitz of Mauston; Mr. and Mrs. T. J. McGlynn of Owen; Mr.a nd Mrs. Julius LeClaire, and daughter Lelah and Mrs. Edith Kramer of Abbotsford; Mr. and Mrs. Willard Lord of Carrel; and Arthur LeClaire of Tripoli.

Response

The obit above says Mrs. George LeClaire was Elsie G.  Smythe Leclaire.

Her headstone in the Baraboo Catholic Cemetery is engraved Susie G. (Genevive) 1882-1925. Her daughter Wilma never knew her as Elsie nor EVER knew of her Mother using that name.

There is a ? mark after 6:30 A.M. in the obit. The Mass was at 6:30 AM, per Wilma, as the cortege had to get from Cadott to Baraboo in time for burial that day.

She was the daughter of David B. Smythe (1850-1904) and Anna Kieffer  (1858-1944) buried just south of Susie in the Catholic Cemetery in Baraboo.  Archie Thomas
